Conservation &
restoration
An
oil painting, much like human beings, is subject to the ageing
process. The cohesion between the paint layer and underlying
priming tends to weaken with time, this causes in turn cracks
which in turn also can result in paint loss. When this occurs,
the painting is in need of both conservation and restoration.
The oxidation of the varnish, or its yellowing, combined with
surface particles and dust, change the visual balance of the
painting, therefore motivating its removal and replacement.
Preventive measures, such as the monitoring and control of the
humidity and temperature in the surrounding environment, can
slow down the ageing process of a painting.
When asked about whether or not to contact a conservator; I say
that when you begin to see noticeable change in the structure
and surface of a painting, it is time to contact a professional.
It can be a crack in the paint layer, paint loss, or that the
painting has become darker. ”Chief conservator, Anna
Catellani"
